Snubber network module for protecting contacts

A classic snubber network is a 100nF capacitor and 100 ohm resistor in series. They are often used across switching contacts like relays or contactors to quench the slight arc when breaking high or inductive loads. They work by providing an alternative easier path for the arc "noise" than the air gap of the opening contact, shunting it and allowing the arc across the contacts to break.

The resistor is used to limit the current through the capacitor, and also the current that could flow when the contacts close while the capacitor has a charge on it.

With triac circuits the snubber can shunt voltage transients and also reduce the risk of the triac being falsely triggered by electrical noise or spikes across it, especially when switching inductive loads.

The MOV (metal Oxide Varistor) on this module is an unusual addition that will provide extra protection against voltage spikes.
