In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home I was joined by Mark Mulholland.
Mark, like myself, is originally from Glasgow, and has lived in France, Ireland, Germany, Haiti, Mali, and now calls Paris home.
Mark takes us through busking his way around Europe in the late 80’s and early 90’s, where he discovered that if you could generate enough money to eat and a bottle of wine by singing songs, then there were plenty of good times to be had on the road.
After several years of being permanently transient, and of no real fixed abode, Mark settled in Berlin. In fact, what started out as a 3 week trip to play some shows and catch up with friends, turned into a 14 year stay. There’s also the second hand bookshop that he ran for 10 years or so in the city…
He recalls how meeting his now wife, led to them relocating to Haiti and then to Mali, where they lived for several years. While living in Haiti, Mark recorded albums with the legendary artist, Franketienne, and in Mali with Toumani Diabaté. He also created the Festival Acoustik Bamako, where artists such as Damon Albarn and Oxmo Puccino performed.
There’s talk of his own band ‘Two Dollar Bash’, how technology has helped with the production process for musicians, recording albums in Bamako and in the West of Scotland for the Alba Griot Ensemble project.
We talk about the joys of the Scottish weather (of course), producing for the Glitterbeat record label, Mark’s forthcoming solo project and why Salvador Dali was right about Perpignon train station being the centre of the universe.
