My brother Jared stops by to chat about some stories when we were growing up. We talk about playing on the rope swing at my grandparents’ house and playing a game of strength with a surplus parachute in the wind. I am reminded of our Sumo Wrestling matches in Japan as well as the toy Grover doll that we are both pretty sure is possessed of evil and talking my mother into helping shoot water balloons from the garage. Much of what we did wasn’t thought out very well, but we didn’t die, so we have that going for us. As always it was fun, and I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with us.

Fly Fishing Guide Stories

Locations: Utah and SW Wyoming

1997 to the Present

I have had some amazing days guiding for trout with a fly rod. There have been ups and downs and everything in between. Most days we hit the water, learn a lot, have opportunities to catch trout, and the entire time we are outside experiencing nature. Now from time to time, something happens that is new or bizarre. Often these experiences start with a question…sometimes as a guide we pretend to not hear the foolish ones as to not embarrass people. And then sometimes, it is too good to pass up. 

I have a full-time job now days, so I only guide on my days off. My days off book up pretty quickly during peak season, but there is always a chance we can get out on the water to chase trout. If you are looking to book a trip hit up Jans in Park City, UT. I always recommend full day trips because they give us more options of places to go and see. If something truly bizarre happens maybe you will make it on the next podcast! Hope you enjoy these stories from being on the water. There are more to come!

Suzi, Snow Camos, and the Beast

Here are a couple stories about Suzi the Suzuki Moped, getting the Beast stuck, getting so cold and wet I almost didn’t make it home, and one of the best Christmas gifts I have ever received. 

Looking ahead to the next season has always been a passion and a curse for me. I enjoy the anticipation and the planning of the next adventure almost as much as the adventure itself. Today’s podcast talks about some of the grouse hunts I took the family moped on (Suzi), about a time when my little brother and I almost destroyed the Beast, and a time when I was careless and almost lost my shotgun in the river. I learned a lot of lessons because of these stories. Some were scary at the time, some scary when I looked back but as always it was fun, and I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with me.

Stories From My Youth: Part 1

Early 1980’s

There are so many crazy and fun stories from my youth that it will take many episodes to get them all recorded. Part 1 includes bike riding after school to fishing spots, dodging traffic for crayfish, fishing off the pier in Yokosuka Japan, my first pheasant hunt, learning how to hunt and stalk mice with a BB gun, and catching my first trout with my father. Many of the small things I did as a youth have helped me to become a better fisher and hunter now that I am aging into the “Old Salt” I look forward to being. My First Turkey Hunt

Location: Polk County, Wisconsin, USA

April 2011

My first turkey was easier than it should have been. I had some great teachers and I discuss some things that a turkey hunter should consider when using calls, decoys, and setting up. As always it was fun and I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with me.   

For those who are interested, you can get your turkey tags through the Game & Fish in most states. Some have over-the-counter (OTC) options but many are by lottery draw only. Visit your local Game and Fish web site for opportunities near you. If you have never been hunting and would like to, first step is to get your Hunter Safety Course finished up. Some states offer a Mentorship as a possibility. Another great option is to contact the First Hunt Foundation.   It is a great organization that is to help those interested in learning to hunt. I also highly recommend Volume 1 & 2 of The Complete Guide to Hunting, Butchering, and Cooking Wild Game books by Steven Rinella. Another outstanding resource is Hank Shaw and his books as well as Hunt Angler Gardener Cook group on Facebook.

Foraging for Mushrooms

Location: Uinta Mountains, Summit County, Utah

Foraging for mushrooms is an outstanding hobby and a great way to add tasty treats to the dinner table. This podcast discusses some cautions and it is highly recommended you look up local experts in your area to get started. Doing this will help you to avoid making mistakes in identification and you will meet fun people.   

For those who are interested, you can find good resource books on Amazon.

Mushrooms Demystified is a bit overwhelming to the novice but is something you will grow into. 

Another book I like is The Complete Mushroom Hunter

Look up local clubs too. The one I learned from is the Mushroom Society of Utah

My First Steelhead

Location: Bulkley River, British Columbia, Canada

Fall 2002

A discussion of the beauty and grandeur of the British Columbia landscape and the amazing steelhead that make the migration to their spawning grounds. I was very unprepared for my first steelhead trip when it came to equipment and especially rain gear. While fighting the fish of a lifetime almost everything that could go wrong did go wrong. It was a great experience and I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with me.   

For those who are interested, I stayed at the Bulkely River Lodge. The people, food, and experience were second to none. I go as often as I am able now. 

If you can’t make it all the way to Canada to chase these amazing fish there may be some closer to you. When it comes to tying flies for steelhead one of my favorite books is Steelhead Fly Tying Art & Design by Dec Hogan and Marty Howard.

Stories are my favorite form of communication, and my favorite stories are those that get me to think, cry, laugh, or even change and adapt. A good story stays with you. My father would say, “You only remember the best and the worst, mediocrity is forgotten.” 

Stories told well allow a listener to live vicariously, reminisce of past experiences, or even dream of adventures to come. I will be sharing stories with you from my own experiences as a fly-fishing guide, retail manager, outdoor enthusiast, traveler, explorer and just everyday life. There will be stories from guests and stories from friends and others in different locales and varied walks of life. Every day is an opportunity for new adventures and expanding your own story.
