More Alike Than You Think

So… What Is Vocational Rehabilitation??

Listen Later

Vocational Rehabilitation—often called “VR”—can sound confusing, intimidating, or just plain overwhelming. In this episode of More Alike Than You Think, we break it down in real, human terms.

Host Cade Hebert is joined by Serena Gilbert, Youth Services Program Manager with Colorado’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, alongside Youth Advisory Community member Lily, for an honest and engaging conversation about what VR actually is, who it’s for, and how it can support young people with disabilities in finding meaningful, competitive employment.

Together, they explore:

  • What vocational rehabilitation really means (and what it doesn’t)
  • How youth can start working with VR as early as age 15
  • Pre-employment transition services like job exploration, workplace readiness, and work-based learning
  • Navigating accommodations, self-advocacy, and benefits while working
  • Common misconceptions about VR and why it’s okay not to have a career plan figured out yet

Serena also shares her own story of using VR as a blind college student and how those supports helped shape her path, offering encouragement to young people who may be hesitant to ask for accommodations or support.

Whether you’re a young adult with a disability, a family member, or someone supporting youth in transition, this episode offers clarity, reassurance, and a reminder that you don’t have to navigate the path to employment alone.

🎧 Listen in to learn how VR can help you explore your options, build confidence, and move toward a future that fits you.
