SoCal Fishing Report August 8 2025 - Hot Bites, Tidal Trends, and Lure Tips for LA Anglers

Listen Later

This is Artificial Lure with your Los Angeles area fishing report for Friday, August 8, 2025.

Sunrise hit at 6:07AM and sunset’s rolling in at 7:49PM, and we've got over 13 hours of daylight—plenty of time to chase that big bite. Weather is looking fair today, classic SoCal summer with mild morning temps in the high 60s, warming up to low 80s inland by mid-afternoon. Light west winds are forecast; expect a gentle onshore breeze and moderate ocean chop.

Tides today in Long Beach are shaping up for some solid fishing windows. First low tide came early at 3:29AM, first high tide peaks at 10:01AM, followed by a mid-day low at 2:29PM, then a beefy evening high around 8PM. According to Tides4Fishing, we’ve got a tidal coefficient pushing 70 and climbing to 80 by nightfall, so expect stronger currents and a lively bite, especially at the edges of the tides.

Fish activity is good across the board, with a hot bite on structure and around kelp for bottom species. Long Beach sport boats yesterday reported solid counts: Victory tallied 37 Sand Bass, 250 Sculpin, and nearly 70 Rockfish, while El Patron brought in a nice mix of 22 Sheephead, 12 Calico Bass, 2 Yellowtail, and over 120 Whitefish. Monte Carlo out of San Pedro weighed in 36 Calico Bass and 6 Sheephead—those calicos are chewin’ hard on plastics and the sheephead are fattened up on shellfish bits.

Freshwater anglers around the L.A. lakes are working for bass tucked tight to structure. Most bites are coming on slow-fished dark plastics and creature baits near rocks and weedy edges, particularly at dawn. Catfish are good with cut makrel, chicken liver, and nightcrawlers—try the deeper holes after sunset for a chunky channel cat.

For saltwater, the best lures are swimbaits in olive or brown, and big plastics tipped with squid for rockfish, whitefish, and lingcod. If you’re throwing hardware, try a Rapala Xrap 14 in natural foil for kingfish or jetty yellowtail, ripping it fast to trigger a chase. Surface iron (Tady 45, Salas 7X in blue/white) are landing barracuda and yellowtail on the reefs and outside kelp beds. Don’t overlook bait—frozen squid works for everything from calico to rockfish, and live sardines or anchovies are killer for bigger game if you can pick them up at the bait barge.

Hot spots this morning:
- The Horseshoe Kelp and oil rigs off Long Beach are holding sand bass and barracuda, especially on the afternoon tide swing.
- Cabrillo Beach jetty is prime for calico bass and sculpin; fish the moving water for your best bite.
- For freshwater, try Echo Park Lake early for bass and catfish, and El Dorado for bluegill and cats.

Notable mention: sheephead are showing up heavy around structure, so bring shrimp, clams, or cut squid if you want to target them specifically. Keep an eye on any algae advisories if you’re headed out to inland lakes—the bite can still be good, just fish deeper and tighter to cover.

Bring sunscreen, polarized glasses, hydrate, and remember—no hard liquor on the boat, keep it chill out there!
