Howdy anglers, Artificial Lure here with your Saturday morning fishing report for May 24, 2025, coming at you from the Los Angeles area.
The sun rose about 5:45 this morning and we're looking at a sunset around 7:50 tonight, giving you plenty of daylight to get those lines wet. Weather's shaping up nicely with temps in the mid-70s and a light breeze – perfect conditions to be out on the water.
Tide-wise, we're seeing a moderate incoming tide through mid-morning, with high tide hitting around noon, followed by an outgoing for the afternoon. This pattern's been producing some decent action, especially during those transition periods.
The fishing scene is really heating up around SoCal. Offshore boats out of Santa Barbara have been hammering the rockfish, with recent reports showing impressive counts of sand bass and kelp bass. The Coral Sea landed 86 sand bass and 24 kelp bass just two days ago, along with some nice lingcod and sheephead in the mix[1]. If you're heading to the islands, keep an eye out for halibut and seabass which have been turning on with our stable weather pattern over the past couple weeks[4].
For you bass fishermen, the spawn is in full swing with water temps holding steady in the mid to high 60s. The fish are exactly where you'd expect – shallow spawning zones and just off the edges. Your best bets have been dropshots, split-shots, tubes and Ned rigs worked around those shallow drop-offs. Brown and orange jigs and Senkos are also getting picked up when worked slow and tight to cover[2].
Crappie action has been decent in brush piles and submerged timber. Minnows or small grubs are your ticket there. The trout plants from a couple weeks back are still producing limits if you're using PowerBait, micetails, or floating nightcrawlers[2].
For pier anglers, things have been a bit hit or miss. Oceanside Pier has slowed from the April action, but you can still find some perch inshore, occasional croakers, and the odd halibut mid-pier. The water conditions aren't ideal after recent sand pumping operations, but should improve soon[5].
Hot spots this weekend: I'd check out Dana Point where the local captains have been putting clients on fish consistently. The Kings River's also fishing great right now with March Browns starting to pop up – tight line nymphing has been very productive there[3].
For you fly guys hitting the freshwater, the South Fork of the Kings is worth the drive if you've got the time.
That's it for now, folks. This is Artificial Lure saying tight lines and see ya on the water!
