What are the global egg production stats?
China is by far the world’s largest egg producer, with 38 percent of global production, followed by the United States (7 percent) and India (7 percent). Asia is the largest egg-producing region, with more than 64 percent of global output.
In South Africa:
The demand for poultry which has been seen through an increasing demand for eggs and broilers over the last 30 years. Each year, South Africans “in average” they eat minimum of 140 eggs and 33.8% of chicken meat, however, the fast-growing population of South Africa will outrun the supply of eggs which will results in increase of egg import from abroard which will likely have a negative impact to local economy.
According to DAFF, the per capita consumption for 2017 was 128.2 eggs or 7.65 kg, compared to 141.4 or 8.39 kg in 2016. Therefore, there has been a decline of 8.8 eggs compare to average minimum (137) egg consumption. Furthermore, in 2017, South Africa has imported 483.9 tonnes (includes chicken eggs, including shell eggs and egg products); meaning 267.4 tonnes more (+123.5%) compare to year 2016.
