Social Media and the UK Election

Listen Later

Prime Minister Theresa May's decision to call a snap election, three years ahead of schedule, was a gamble that did not pay off. Instead of consolidating her Conservative Party's majority ahead of Brexit negotiations, the election resulted in a hung parliament, with a minority Tory government propped up by the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party. Labour, meanwhile, are newly emboldened under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, who led the party to a first increase in seats since 1997.
In this episode Storyful’s London team discuss how the UK election played out over social media, the ways politicians and voters used new technologies, and what impact, if any, "fake news" had on the campaign.
