In this special we speak with Pat Byrne who says in his new book Liberating the Productive Forces "Most socialists have not properly studied Lenin's News Economic Policy and how it worked in Russia. Instead they have been supplied with a few brief quotations that have satisfied the factional disputes." The book is Volume 1 in a series titled Understanding the China Puzzle. Byrne also quotes one of Deng Xiaoping's biographers as saying "The theory of reform and opening that Deng developed several years after Mao's death, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, did not originate with him. It was rooted in...Bukharin's interpretation of Lenin's New Economic Policy aimed at developing a market economy under the control of the Communist Party." Here we talk about the collapse of the Soviet Union, the pivots and periods in China and how those were influenced by the Soviet Union and then we also discuss China's continued unprecedented growth today.
