POEM:
Freedom Sings by Gary North
I hear freedom songs in
whistles blown
to alert neighbors of
danger in their midst.
I hear freedom songs
in the sounds of
instructions given
and carried out:
neighbors driven to
appointments;
errands run for others;
food delivered to those
fearful of venturing forth;
neighbors I have seen
standing vigil on street corners
at this time of terror.
I hear a freedom song
in the voice of a taco shop owner
who, through gentle tears,
thanks her neighbors for
looking out for her,
as neighbors will.
I hear freedom songs in
the voices
of the woman, now passed,
who said
“I don’t hate you”,
and the man, now passed,
whose last words
were “Are you all right?”
I hear the single resonating note
of freedom itself
in the desire
of every immigrant
who just,
simply
wants to be free.
