The Interabled Couple Podcast

Society Is the Barrier, Not the Disability

Listen Later

In this episode, we challenge the idea that disability is the biggest obstacle—and instead unpack how society often creates the real barriers. We also chat about how society views any relationship that doesn’t fit the norm—making this conversation relatable far beyond disability. We share what it’s like navigating everyday situations as an interabled couple, from barriers and disrespect to moments where people speak to a partner instead of the disabled person. These experiences open up a bigger conversation about awareness, boundaries, and how we choose to respond.

We also talk about the role of a partner—when to advocate, how to support, and why setting clear boundaries together matters. Ashley brings insight from her work in developmental services, highlighting how society can devalue people who are seen as “different,” and what it actually looks like to support others in a way that respects their dignity and autonomy.
