Domestic violence comes in many forms such as physical, emotional, verbal, sexual, financial/economic abuse, and so on. Under no circumstances are such abuses against women and men, in their various manifestations, encouraged or allowed in Islam. There are many examples in Qur'ān and ḥadīth that describe the sort of loving, respectful, and kind behaviour that husbands and wives ought to exhibit to one another. Islamic teachings indicate that marriage is mutual love and mercy between a couple and that its objectives, besides perpetuating human life, are emotional well-being and spiritual harmony.
