While it may seem to many that the higher you go in a company, the easier the job gets, this could not be further from the truth. Olivier Meganck has seen both sides of this spectrum and he is passing along some amazing tips to help you manage the increasing responsibilities of your jobs. You’ll hear about finding your working-life balance if it’s even out there, making a career out of following your passions, and what to do when selling your company.
- Don’t be misled by the facade of everything becoming easier as you climb up the corporate ladder. For example, with each promotion comes new challenges and more people are relying on you to make their living.
One of the largest challenges with running a business internationally is related to being in completely different time zones. Although it may be the dead of night where you are, if a client has a problem on the opposite side of the globe, you’ll be getting a call.Try to find the business that also serves as your passion project and gives you an outlet for creativity and growth. When you are truly earnest in pursuing your passion and you introduce it organically and without pretext to other people, they are more inclined to develop the same interest and become loyal customers.Selling your company can be very emotional. Because of the emotional connection you have with it, you should probably have someone else break the news to your team as this is not news that should be delivered through a downpour of tears. When transferring your business to a new owner, you need to make sure the clients needs are still met and that the transition does not get dragged out. You need a plan in place to allow a quick and seamless transition. Staff retention is also critical! The key to successfully selling your business is to maintain client retention. If your clients all start looking elsewhere, the buyer may back out of the deal or you may lose out on the initial offer for your company because of the depreciation.- “The glamorous lifestyle fizzles away the moment you start climbing up on the ladder” - Olivier Meganck
