Some Thoughts on Dr. Seuss

Listen Later

I thought it would be relevant to talk about Dr. Seuss briefly because people are quite upset about it. Seems that people fall into one of two camps. That is some are happy that the publisher has pulled the books in question while others are quite upset and don’t get what all the fuss is all about.

It might seem strange to find someone like Dr. Seuss being racist at all, however, you have to understand that at the time Seuss was publishing his books culture was very different. It was commonplace to depict people of different ethnic groups in a negative fashion. Although I don’t think Seuss aimed to be hurtful to different ethnic groups or cultures, I think it was just standard practice back then. Of course, that doesn’t make it ok. Since society has progressed forwards in the last 50-60 years, we now realize that some of the thing in his works aren’t ok. Doesn’t mean your kids will become racist if they read Dr. Seuss’ books or if they read “If I Ran the Zoo.” It just means that some of his works are just outdated as some of the depictions aren’t appropriate anymore. Sure, they were back then but not anymore. It’s not about cancel culture trying to take offense to everything.

That being said, I think a lot of this is being blown out of proportion, remember the media needs to push polarizing content because it gets people to watch and pay attention to things. Also makes me wonder why they choose to talk about that and not all the other things that have been going on lately. All in all I do think the publishing company is right to cease publishing the books in question as racism has no place in America.
