Somi has been hailed as the new Nina Simone. She is the multi-award winning African-American jazz sensation who created the new sound dubbed New African Jazz. She was here as part of the star-studded concert series for the opening of the Africa Hall and Africa Institute in Sharjah last month. Sally Mousa sat down with her and spoke to her about her latest critically acclaimed album Petite Afrique inspired by Harlem’s vibrant west-African communities, and the legendary mentors who have shaped her sound, including the late, great Hugh Masekela.
