SOMMTALKS Wine Tasting Series with Tony Rossi of Enolo Wine Cafe

Listen Later

Anthony (Tony) Rossi at Chicago’s Enolo Wine Cafe
Listen in to this week’s episode with General Manager and Sommelier Tony Rossi of Enolo Wine Cafe in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. Tony creates and curates this interesting wine list that boasts a strong by the glass program as well as several Coravin flights of higher end wine options.
In this segment, we taste the following wines :
2012 Domaine Koutsoyannopoulos Santorini Assyrtiko, Greece – Rosi loves the versatility of this wine, with the aromatics of an Austrian Riesling yet with an oxidative quality and assertive stone fruit aromatics.  This wine is deep rich golden yellow, with a hint of orange. The cool maritime climate in Santorini keep the acidity relatively high, thanks to a unique trellising method that bundles the vines.
Blank Bottle Winery   “The Life of a Black Valentine” (Syrah, Cinsaut, Mourvedre Blend), Swartland, South Africa  A new world wine with old world characteristics . Pieter Walzer picks grapes from about 70 sites and creative innovative blends. Imported by Chicago’s Blue Crane, the wine has wonderful ripe freshness in the aromatics and juicy fresh fruit on the palate, with a hint savory herb and pepper. It’s a great food wine and Rossi suggests pairing it with Enolo Chef Adam Grant’s Trio of House Made Sausages.
Please tune in for the past episode with Tony where we discuss the penchant for Enolo’s younger wine consumers to move away from the bigger, juicier, heavily oaked styles of wine their parent consumed in the 1980’s. Rossi feels these Millenials are more adventurous and willing to taste the esoteric wines on his list, with enthusiasm and curiosity. Many of those in their 20’s and 30’s have lived or travelled abroad, he says,  and return home with a taste for International wines.  He shares information on two of his favorite rosé wines from Italy and Greece, as well.
