Yao Family Wines
This week, we’re back to Napa Valley for Part 2 the story of Yao Family Wines with Tom Hinde, President and Director of Winemaking. Learn how the five-time NBA All-Star got his start in wine then launched his own winery on Main Street in St. Helena.
Today, we have the pleasure of tasting through two of the wines with Tom Hinde. The white and red are:
2015 Yao Family Sauvignon Blanc, Oakville and Rutherford fruit goes into this, plus 8% Semillion which adds to the aromatics and the wine’s weight. It’s a nice lean wine, with just a bit of neutral large barrel aging and lees contact. Pears, melon and fig are the seductive flavors— this wine is not a grassy French style Sauvignon Blanc.  Great with shellfish, lobster or other shellfish.
2013 Yao Ming Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep in red color, this wine was just released in Spring of 2016. The wine is aged for 18 months in 100% French barrels, in new oak. A touch of Cab Franc and Petite Verdot add to the complexity of the wine. Flavors are chock full of dark fruits like blueberry, blackberry and plum, with an undertone of cherry and vanilla. This gorgeous 2013 vintage, with even and balanced weather, yielded a wonderful harvest.
Ming not only takes his winemaking seriously, but he’s also passionate about philanthropy. He created Yao Ming Foundation to educate underprivileged kids and is also active in Wildaid, aimed to save animals from extinction (in partnership with Sir Richard Branson). Wow– Yao has taken an amazing journey and along with Hinde,  and produces extraordinary Napa Valley wines.  Today, we taste several of the wines so tune in.
