Shri Periasami Thooran is one of the prominent composers of Carnatic music in Tamil Language.
Shri Periasami Thooran was a multifaceted personality. He was not merely a composer but a patriot, poet and a teacher. He took a very active part in the freedom movement. He was a devotee of Mahakavi Subramania Bharatiar and Mahatma Gandhi. He wrote over six hundred simple songs which carried deep philosophical truths. This is a composition composed by him on Lord Karthikeya, the second son of Lord Shiva, who is well known as Murugan in Tamil. In this composition, he says:
Oh Lord, if I call Muruga, Muruga, and invite you to my abode will your heart not melt with compassion and yield to my plea?
Even if I mention your name once or meditate on your feet, you provide me solace. Therefore, I utter your name day and night.
Oh handsome embodiment of love! Did you dislike me for any errors I committed inadvertently? Did you get angry at me?
Oh Lord of lords residing in the town Tiruchendur, I humbly request you to put up with my deficiencies and shower your grace on me, because I am only a small and destitute person.
The composition is in the Raga Saaveri set to Misra chapu Taala and is rendered by Nirmala Ramachandran.
