Shelli Sonstein's Sessions - Jeff Cool’s Black Sunday story - Retired FDNY’ers (and Q104.3 listener) Jeff Cool not only survived 9/11, 4 years later, he survived what the FDNY calls Black Sunday, the deadliest day for the FDNY since 9/11. January 23, 2005, 3 NYC firefighters died in one day in 2 separate fires. FDNY’er Richard Scalfani died in a house fire in East New York, after his equipment got caught on a coat rack. Earlier that day, FDNY Lt. Curtis Meyran and firefighter John Bellew jumped to their deaths when trapped from the 4th floor of a Bronx tenement fire . Joe DiBernardo died 6 years later. Rookie FDNY’er Brendan Cawley, Gene Stolowski and Jeff Cool were severely injured. Just recently beating Covid-19, retired FDNY’er Jeff Cool tells the story from that dark day.
