Treatment of cancer has been transformed by the new immune checkpoint inhibitor class of agents that have shown remarkable benefit in many different types of tumors, but they can also cause unusual immune-related adverse effects (irAEs) that can affect any organ system. Expanding use of these immunotherapies in oncology means that emergency medicine professionals can expect to encounter an increasing number of patients experiencing various irAEs in emergency departments. Timely recognition, accurate diagnosis, and effective management of irAEs can ensure that patients derive maximum benefit from these therapies, and emergency nurses have an important role to play in evaluating and triaging these patients.
