Sore Losers BMX Podcast

A conversation with my friend Luigi Viacava from Lima, Peru. Luigi is a street rider and videographer who runs Primate BMX, a crew, youtube channel, clothing brand, and at one point a distributor of Animal parts. We talk about his experience hosting the Vans BMX team on their trip to Lima filming the Grey Video in 2019, his recent 500 km bike-packing trip, and how street riding in South America compares to New York based on his trip here in 2017. To make things better our mutual friend Franco Leon (podcast veteran, see ep 21) held down the co-host spot since him and Luigi go way back. Back from the woodward after dark podcast (ep 24), we're talking to my friend Dylan O'Leary (the man you can thank for the term Long Island Legend). We have been riding the same stuff for 10-12 years but somehow never met until recently. Life is weird. Anyway, Dylan is an excellent photographer, owner of many broken cars, and soon a whole damn house. Hard working adult shit. Despite his chronic grump we love ya Dylan. Skip work this Saturday.

Austin is back so I made him re-watch Left Right (youtube link below) and then I talk about all the reasons why its one of my all time favorite BMX DVDs. Pretty sure he likes it too. The lineup is heavy, the riding is insane even by todays standards, the music instantly puts you in a good mood, and the filming/editing/graphics tie it all together perfectly. Austin went to Paris again so I called in my dudes Anthony Cuadros and Lewis Colascione to see what they've been up to. Recorded on site in Buds Barn at the Woodward East Fall Adult Weekend with a crew of Long Island Legends gathered around a microwave drinking beer whilst a party rages on outside the cabin. The Queenz Kidz Video is done, its out, so we grabbed Matt Smith to give us some background on the project. We get into the premiere night at Maloof Skatepark, some stories behind the clips, the editing process, song selection, camera gear, all that good stuff. Over the course of six years the squad went through some changes, cameras broke, riders broke off, but they came through in the end with an amazing video. Sometimes street riding does not go as planned, and last Saturday was one of those days. Justin talks about driving around Queens, NY and not riding all that much, but still squeezing in a couple dinks for insta (see @jkoebele) and then having a great night at the Queenz Kidz premiere. Shout out to the crew for killing it, more on that next week. Austin talks about easing back into riding after his mysterious rib injury, we talk shit on condescending doctors, and then talk about the struggles and possible solutions to flying with a bmx bike. After moving from NY to Florida a couple months ago, we thought it was time to catch up with our buddy Franco Leon. Franco has known Craig Passero longer than anyone else in the Whammo squad, he's a lifetime bmx nerd and still manages to juggle multiple hobbies outside of riding (modding cars, playing tennis, not to mention getting engaged -- shoutout to Lisa). In this episode we find out how he met Craig through high school, how to keep your bike dialed like some kind of adult, and his recent move to Florida adjusting to the new climate and riding scene. After a couple years off the bike due to a back injury (its complicated), our good buddy Fred Drew is back on the bike and we couldn't be more stoked. Some of my most memorable BMX trips have been with Fred in his legendary red camry. He is a compulsive shit talker but also one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Strange. Fred explains his back injury and long recovery process, a few highlights from sporadic road trips (BCN, Toronto, Florida, Providence, Philly, Pittsburg) and his long-term plan to make a full length BMX video. Also can't forget to mention the DNS 2 DVD is out now, the premiere/jam was awesome and you should grab a copy from @juffpurdy and maybe a tie-dye shirt while you're at it. 

No guest, but Austin is back from Paris, he survived his Spanish road test, and is anxiously awaiting celebratory burgers from Glovo.
