  • Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) - The Joe Strummer Curated Soundtrack with Daniel Efram (The Steve Keene Art Book)

Photographer / Band Manager / and Producer of the Steve Keene Art Book, Daniel Efram joins Ryan and Brandice this week to talk about George Armitage's 1997 film, Grosse Pointe Blank and it's very Joe Strummer infused soundtrack. Even though the film was enjoyed by all, there are some very differing opinions on the use of music in the film. (none of the differing opinions are about the awesomness of Joe Strummer). We Discuss:

    • How the music goes nostalgic without being too on the nose (or is it?)
    • The laughably bad trailer for the movie back in 1997
    • The sneaky success of the soundtrack
    • The Steve Keene Artbook (buy it! link below!)
    • A funny story about Robert Schneider from Apples in stereo playing on The Colbert Report episode, Countdown to Guitarmageddon

    • Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003)- The Soundtrack the Samples Other Soundtracks with Poet/Writer Jaylan Salman?

All the way from Egypt, poet/writer, Jaylan Salman, joins Ryan and Nicole to talk about the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's 2003 film, Kill Bill, Vol. 1. Just like the film on a visual level, the soundtrack pays homage to many films on an audio level, both famous and obscure. The soundtrack was certified Gold but its influence extends far past the amount of units that it sold.We discuss:

      • The movie and why Ryan took so long to see it
      • How the RZA "sampled" other film soundtracks
      • Why this revenge film works so well
      • Who we think could put together a killer soundtrack like the RZA

Brittney Williams, aka The Reclusive Blogger is our guest this week to talk about the soundtrack to the 2015 Lin Manuel Miranda musical phenomenon, Hamilton, which captured the zeitgeist in ways that few musicals have. There's a lot to unpack and luckily for our hosts, Brittney knows her Hamilton lore.

          We discuss:

          The lyrical density of Hamilton

          The Hamilton Mixtape and Hamildrops

        • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) - The Soundtrack With Eclectic Needle Drops and an Anxiety Inducing Score with When Chinephiles Attack's Josh & Lacy

Lacy and Josh Vetter from the When Cinephiles Attack Podcast are the guests for our 2023 Valentine's Day episode and they're joining Ryan and Nicole to talk about the soundtrack to Michel Gondry's 2004 film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which bounces between Jon Brion's score and songs from artists such as Beck, The Polyphonic Spree, and The Willowz. From discussing the importance of the score to the needle drop of Beck's cover of The Korgis' "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime", all the music adds to this trippy, kind of Sci-Fi, romance.

We talk about Jon Brion's career as composer producer, how the film elevated that status of Gondry and Brion to the point where they were producing and drumming on a very popular hip hop album, and how Jon Brion has worked on everything from animated films to Beyonce's Lemonade since this soundtrack dropped. Also, we all share stories of films that we had to take a break from because of humiliating experiences attached to them.

        • Laurel Canyon (2002) - The Soundtrack where Folk Implosion is a Backing Band with Lou Barlow (Sebadoh, the Kids Soundtrack)
Indie Rock Legend, Lou Barlow, is our guest this week and it was truly an honor to interview him. He soundtracked the 1995 cult classic Kids with John Davis as the Folk Implosion. We covered this soundtrack for our very first episode. The movie also features a previously released song from Lou's band Sebadoh, and a song from his other other side band, Deluxx Folk Implosion. The soundtrack spawned the Top 40 Single, "Natural One". We chat about Kids and working with our favorite soundtrack supervisor, Randall Poster. We also discuss the various shows and movies that have licensed Lou's music. We also talk about Lou's acting debut in Lisa Cholodenko's 2002 film, Laurel Canyon (which was scored by Craig Wedren who I interviewed last year for the podcast). And last but not least, we talk about Lou's new podcast, Raw Impressions which he co-hosts with his wife, Adelle. It launched late last year. The podcast can be found wherever you're listening to this one.

Dave Zalatoris from the Beer in Front Podcast is our guest for this episode to talk about the many song used throughout the 6 season run of The Sopranos. We go from the opening notes of The Alabama 3's "Woke Up This Morning" to the abrupt end of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" with Dave's favorite music selections in between.
