Soup To Nuts (1930)

Listen Later

Soup to Nuts (1930) is a madcap pre-Code comedy notable as the big-screen debut of the original quartet who would later become The Three Stooges. Written by the legendary cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg (who also makes a cameo), the film stars vaudeville comedian Ted Healy as a scheming costume salesman. The plot revolves around a failing costume shop, a fireman’s ball, and a fledgling revolution, but the real attraction is Healy’s firehouse sidekicks: Shemp, Moe (billed as Harry Howard), and Larry Fine. Here, they perform early versions of their classic routines and sing together a cappella for the only time with Shemp. A fascinating and chaotic piece of comedy history, Soup to Nuts captures the raw energy of the act just before they broke out on their own to become one of the most famous comedy teams of all time.
