Part 2: Sovilla and Lucinda Coblentz are entrepreneur sisters who run their small family Amish custom woodworking business in Texas together with their husbands. We discuss the methods used against captured Amish escapees and that it’s a miracle that any child makes a successful attempt after the first one has failed. Torah and Sovilla both had failed first escape attempts and were subsequently treated like captured terrorists. The force that drove all three girls to successfully flee was their primal desire for freedom, to express themselves creatively and make their own choices, in things as seemingly small as picking out what clothes to wear and continuing an education beyond the Amish 8th grade. The sisters also answer one of Torah’s set of questions that she asks every guest on Season 1: Is there a God? Tune in next week, March 15, for the third and final part of this story! IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN: - The interrogation and torture methods by Amish clergy and elders that the sisters were subjected to for wanting to escape - What “rumspringa” really is (it’s not what you hear about in pop culture or Amish “reality” TV shows) - In what ways Lucinda lets her 3-year-old daughter make independent choices - The double standard of forgiveness within the Amish - The sisters’ struggles coming to terms with God and biblical interpretations LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: JH Woodworks (Amish craftsmanship): www.jhwoodworks.com Find the girls on Facebook.
