CLICK HERE TO TELL YOUR SENATOR TO OPPOSE THE SAVE ACT.
The League of Women Voters envisions a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge and the confidence to participate. We believe in the power of women to create a more perfect democracy.
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act is a bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in April 2025. It proposes requiring all individuals to provide in-person documentary proof of U.S. citizenship—such as a birth certificate or passport—when registering to vote or updating voter registration information. This requirement would apply even though voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering.
🔹 Potential Impacts of the SAVE ActThe League of Women Voters strongly opposes the SAVE Act, viewing it as a direct attack on the fundamental right to vote and a dangerous step backward for democracy. They argue that the act would create unnecessary barriers to voting and disproportionately affect marginalized communities.
