Soft Weird

Speedos, Deep Feels & the Rundown

Listen Later

In this first episode of Soft Weird, Paul Cram kicks things off with a splash — literally. Set at a backyard “Pride in July” party complete with three inflatable pools, rainbow decor, and a bonfire, Paul reflects on how joining queer sports leagues like Stonewall Dodgeball and Kickball has led to unexpectedly deep and affirming friendships. Among speedos, sunscreen, and cold drinks, a conversation with a charming friend named Mac sparks something bigger: a group circle forms under a giant oak tree, and what starts as party banter turns into a soulful round of “The Rundown” and the famous “36 Questions That Lead to Love.”

As shoulders touch and laughter softens into shared vulnerability, Paul finds himself feeling something he’s been building toward for years — belonging. He reflects on the journey from a homophobic religious upbringing to the arm-in-arm warmth of chosen family, and how tools like deep-question prompts can turn casual gatherings into moments of real connection. There’s joy, there’s grief, there’s queer magic, and yes, there’s a lot of weird. And that’s the point.

Paul closes the episode with encouragement for listeners to try The Rundown and the 36 Questions with their own people — whether on a date, with friends, or just as a way to start being braver in conversation. Vulnerability doesn’t have to be heavy, he reminds us. It can be sweaty, half-drunk, and wrapped in a rainbow towel under a tree.

Listeners are invited to subscribe to The Softly Weird Dispatch, Paul’s monthly newsletter full of stories, actor life, and odd little behind-the-scenes moments that don’t quite fit anywhere else. And in classic Paul fashion, the episode ends with a snarky-soft sign-off:
“I hope you have the day you deserve. Smooches.”
