The Lord spoke to the Church at Ephesus after an illustrious 40 year unwavering commitment to truth. The Church probably had known success upon success but unknown to it, a declension, and perhaps complacency had set in. Jesus detects this and warns the Church to do the things done at First, having repented of course. The Successful, triumphant Church needs to take heed lest the fate that happened to this church takes effect. It appears Ephesus never too heed and thus obliterated in time. This can happen to any Church in any or every age.
