Spiritual Pride vs. True Humility | Jonathan Edwards

Deep Dive into Spiritual Pride vs. True Humility by Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards, in the sources, draws a sharp contrast between the characteristics of spiritual pride and pure Christian humility. Spiritual pride often manifests outwardly through a harsh and critical disposition toward others. A spiritually proud person is prone to eagerly point out the faults or spiritual coldness of fellow believers, often using bitter, severe language and assuming a posture of superiority and judgment. They tend to suspect others while remaining inflexible in their own ways and judgments. Furthermore, spiritual pride causes individuals to seek attention by acting singular, stand at a distance from fellow Christians, and react to opposition with increased self-confidence and a focus on the injuries they have received. They frequently adopt an authoritative posture, dictating to others rather than listening, and refusing to engage reasonably with those they deem carnal.

In stark contrast, true Christian humility directs a person's focus inward. A humble saint is most concerned with their own heart, deeply recognizing their own unworthiness and vileness, rather than busying themselves with the shortcomings of others. When confronted with the faults of others, the humble individual responds with grief, pity, gentleness, and meekness. Humility produces a yielding, compliant disposition that seeks to please others in everything except sin. Rather than seeking attention or separation, the humble Christian is clothed in mildness and a sweet, patient spirit. When facing reproach or opposition, they remain silent and use the experience for serious self-examination rather than aggressive self-defense. Additionally, the humble believer naturally assumes the position of a learner rather than a master, remaining eager to receive help from everyone, treating elders with deep reverence, and patiently reasoning with those who object to the faith.
