Intentional Marriage

Spirituality (Religion, Beliefs, Love)

Listen Later

On this episode of Intentional Marriage, co-hosts and married couple – Justin and Cresta Burt – talk about a topic Just can talk about for days: Spirituality.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Spirituality is different from – and you can have it without – religion. Spirituality more defines who you are, shapes your worldview, who you are at the core. It doesn’t matter if you’re agnostic, atheist, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, whatever you are, we’re all searching for that meaning in life, for something bigger and better than ourselves.
  • Spirituality helps everybody maintain a sense of self-efficiency and take accountability for themselves.
  • Love and spirituality is not letting your kids do whatever the hell they want. Love is giving your kids boundaries, teaching your kids how to be productive citizens. Being angry with your kids or not giving them enough love breaks their spirit, and you can see that when you look at them.
  • If you’re religious, do whatever you’ve got to do personally to get your spirit right – read the Bible or the Qur’an or pray. If you’re not religious, meditate – take 10-15 minutes out of your day and just sit. If you can’t calm down  what’s going on inside, your entire life – work, school, relationships with spouse, parents, kids – are all going to be off because something inside you is not right or settled.

BEST MOMENTS

‘A spiritual person always has a hunger to learn, is always hungry for the next thing. One thing religion does is that it always provides the answers for you – it limits you and puts you in a box.’
‘In the last 20-30 years we’ve seen a resurgence in spirituality in our culture specifically, here in the West.’
‘We don’t like to speak of negativity in our lives, we try to keep everything upbeat and positive. Are we perfect? Absolutely not. But it’s something we constantly come back to.’
‘Have an attitude of gratitude.’
