In this episode Elizabeth and Anna M. have a conversation with sports dietitian, Leslie Schilling, about food and nutrition for kids & teen athletes, and the role of coaches. We discuss: 

  • How parents or caregiver can talk to coaches if they have concerns about nutrition messaging and advice
  • How to identify the kind of advice that is appropriate for a sports coach to give regarding food & fueling
  • Ways to manage body/weight concerns with sports that either have weight-based requirements (e.g. rowing, wrestling and weight lifting) or sports where leanness is praised or favored (e.g. gymnastics, running, dance).
  • Signs can parents be on the lookout for that their child or teen isn’t getting adequate nutrition to fuel their movement
  • The dangers of inadequate nutrition for child and teen athletes
  • Ways we can support our child or teen athletes in their sport and with their nutritional needs

Leslie Schilling, MA, RDN, CSCS, CEDRD-S, owns a Las Vegas-based coaching practice specializing in nutrition counseling for families, those of all ages with disordered eating concerns, professional athletes, and performers. In addition to running her practice, Leslie serves as the performance nutrition consultant for Cirque du Soleil® and as an expert contributor to U.S. News & World Report, sharing advice on parenting and health.
