SPP #5 The Definitive Guide on How To Start A Podcast

Listen Later

we go old school and record over Skype, the same way you should if you want to start a podcast. Breaking down the 6 steps to start a podcast. Also, Logan tells us about the crazy week of producing KFC Radio by himself while also contributing to Barstool Idol.

Definitive Guide to Starting A Podcast

  1. get motivated (commit)
  • your podcast is not going to be a huge success after 4 episodes. Be prepared to do it every week for a year

  1. Choose a topic (the more niche, the better)
  • it’s VERY difficult to just make a general lifestyle podcast right now, pick a specific niche

  1. Equipment
  • I’d recommend starting on Skype
  • USB mic (Blue Yeti or Raspberry, $100 price point is safe)
  • Step it up to Zoom Digital recorders, FocusRite USB interface
  • GarageBand/Audacity is fine, Audition is better

  1. Editing
  • sound quality is important, so don’t neglect it, but it doesn’t need to be perfect to start
  • Some intro/outro music is all you really need. Cut out dead air and screw-ups. Edit together segments if not recorded in one shot
  • Audition has “global stretching” shrinks file to 50% so you can edit twice as fast. Make sure you switch it back so it doesn’t sound like chipmunks
  • Audition has podcast filter, levels volume, compress sound

  1. Hosting

-$20/month

-recommend Libsyn

-Audioboom is good too

-SoundCloud is free to start but only about 2 episodes worth of free uploads

-Host generates RSS feed that you submit to iTunes, Spotify, Google etc.

-lots of troubleshooting info available for RSS feed submission (artwork is major issue)

  1. Promotion, Growth, Sales

-no magic formula to getting you podcast to be huge

-guests and social promotion are a must

-twitter, Instagram, Facebook promotion are essential

-engage with audience (voicemails, mailbag etc.

-be relentless. This is why it’s important to pick a good topic. Cover it better than anyone else is covering it. Be obsessed with it

-if you get big enough, your host should be able to help you with sales
