You are in a dimly lit laboratory in Minnesota. It’s a quiet night. Incubators hum like sleeping beasts. The air carries the faint metallic tang of chemicals. On a bench sits an ordinary glass flask filled with a murky, swirling soup. Inside that soup, something impossible is happening. Scientists have built a cell from scratch.
They started with purified chemicals, nothing that was ever part of a living thing, and assembled something that eats, grows, copies its own genetic code, divides into daughters, and even competes with its neighbors for food. They nicknamed it SpudCell because under the microscope it looks a bit like a lumpy green potato, and because it echoes Sputnik, the satellite that launched the space age. This little chemical blob is the closest humanity has ever come to creating life-like behavior from pure non-life in a lab.
