  • “Is It True?” – A C.H. Spurgeon Sermon on Daniel 3:14

In “Is It True?” Charles Spurgeon preaches on Daniel 3:14, using Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego’s refusal to bow before Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image, Spurgeon challenges every believer to examine the sincerity of their faith. He warns that following Christ will bring opposition, temptation, and opportunities to compromise and urges Christians to stand firm whatever the cost. Genuine faith, he insists, is more than an outward profession: it must be proven through obedience, courage, and loyalty to Christ above all.

This sermon was preached September 12, 1886 at the Metropolitan Tabernacle (Sermon No. 1930, Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit, Vol. 32).

  • How to Become Full of Joy — A CH Spurgeon Sermon on 1 John 1:4

In “How To Become Full Of Joy,” Charles Spurgeon shows how true joy stems from a deep connection with Jesus Christ and understanding the truths of Scripture. While external trials and internal struggles can hinder joy, continual engagement with the Bible and a focus on the doctrines of salvation, redemption, and eternal life in Christ can restore and maintain it.

This sermon was delivered on September 17, 1865 at the Metropolitan Tabernacle and was originally published in Volume 57 of the Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit.

  • Consider Before You Fight — A CH Spurgeon Sermon on Luke 14:31-32

“What king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.” — Luke 14:31-32

In "Consider Before You Fight," Charles Spurgeon urges his listeners to count the cost of following Christ before making a commitment. Using the metaphor of a king who carefully considers whether he has the resources to win a war, Spurgeon emphasizes that discipleship requires sacrifice, self-denial, and a willingness to face trials. He warns against a superficial commitment to Christ, encouraging believers to fully understand and accept the challenges that come with true Christian living, while also trusting in God's provision and strength to persevere.

    — SELECT QUOTES —
"The religion of Christ is the most reasonable one in the world, and Jesus Christ never desires to have any disciples who shall blindly follow him without counting the cost."

"My dear friend, will it not be a very dreadful thing to die when you are at war with God? If you could fight this out for ever under such circumstances as those in which you now are, I could not then commend the struggle, but since it must come to such an awful pause, since there must be that death-rattle in your throat, since there must be that clammy sweat upon your brow, O you will want some better business than to be carrying arms against the God of heaven in your dying moments. They that have God for their friend, yet find death no very pleasant task, but what will you find it, who will have to strike yourselves in every blow that you are aiming against the Most High, whom you have made, and continue to make your enemy. "

"There is no sin for which it is worth your while to be damned."

"Cast out your enemies and gods, and then lay hold on Christ, on Jesus Christ alone, and let him stand as Ambassador for thee."

  • An Earnest Warning Against Lukewarmness | Revelation 3:14–21

In "An Earnest Warning about Lukewarmness," Spurgeon warns against the spiritual danger of indifference in churches and individual believers. Preaching on Christ’s rebuke of the church at Laodicea from Revelation 3:14–21, he shows that a church may appear respectable, organized, and prosperous while becoming proud, prayerless, and spiritually dull.

Spurgeon urges believers to repent of self-satisfaction, recover holy zeal, and return to close communion with Christ, who still graciously calls his people to open the door and enjoy renewed fellowship with him.

Preached on December 9, 1877, this sermon calls the listener to focus on Jesus Christ Himself as the sum and substance of our faith.

  • Remember the Sabbath: CH Spurgeon's Views on the Lord's Day

Are Christians still required to keep the Sabbath? And what does keeping the Sabbath really look like?

On this episode we will answer these important questions and many others as we consider the role of the sabbath in the Christian life through the lens of the convictions and teachings of Charles Spurgeon.

We’ll hear from Pastor Brandon Rhea, author of “Spurgeon's Forgotten Sabbatarianism: Examining the Role of the 4th Commandment in His Life and Theology.”

Rhea is the pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Kirksville, Missouri and received his Ph.D. from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, with his dissertation being focused on the Sabbath views of the Prince of Preachers.

    In this conversation we will:
    • Dispel some caricatures about the Sabbath
    • Discuss whether or not this command is still binding for us today
    • How to begin observing the Sabbath if you have never really set it apart as the Lord’s Day.

Along the way, we’ll learn how a commitment to the Sabbath shaped Spurgeon’s ministry, what this looked like in his own life over the years, and how this conviction runs like a thread throughout his preaching and teaching.

Note: This interview originally appeared as an episode of the Reasonable Theology podcast.

  • Sweet Comfort for Feeble Saints – A Spurgeon Sermon on Matthew 12:20

"Christ will not throw you away because you are of no value. You do not know of what use you may be, and you cannot tell how Jesus Christ values you after all." — CH Spurgeon

In “Sweet Comfort for Feeble Saints,” Charles Spurgeon reveals the compassionate nature of Jesus Christ towards those who are spiritually frail and struggling.

Using the metaphor of a bruised reed and smoking flax from Matthew 12:20, Spurgeon illustrates Christ’s gentleness and refusal to extinguish the faintest spark of faith. Christ values you, will not abandon you, and has a purpose for your restoration and growth in grace.

This sermon offers hope and reassurance to those feeling worthless or insignificant in their spiritual journey, reminding them of Christ’s tender care for all of His flock.

This sermon was preached on February 4, 1855 at the New Park Street Chapel. It can be found in Volume 1 of the New Park Street Pulpit.
