Spurscast: Long-Term Outlook Questions

In Spurscast episode 669, Spurscast host Paul Garcia and Project Spurs writer Benjamin Bornstein answer Spurs fan questions about:

The best way for the Spurs to end up with the number one overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft

How long it can take for the Spurs to be an elite team again

Best way to end up with 1st pick

The best chance a team can have of trying to land the number one overall pick in the NBA Draft lottery is by finishing with one of the three worst records in the league. Per Tankathon.com, teams who finish 30th, 29th, and 28th have a 14% chance in the lottery of landing the number overall pick.

According to their over/under wins by Bovada.lv, the Spurs are projected to finish with one of the three worst records, with an over/under of 23.5 wins for this season.

How long can it take for the Spurs to be elite again?

Two questions asked about the Spurs getting back to being an elite team again were if the Spurs go with the free agency route or draft route to try to compete again. The free agency route is difficult because though the Spurs are projected to have a lot of cap space, there just aren't All-NBA level players who will be available in free agency next year.

The draft route looks like the best option, but that could typically take five to six years, and so many things have to go right. Young players on the current team have to go to another level and the Spurs have to get lucky and draft a really good player with their lottery pick, and then that player has to actually be excellent in the NBA when the games start.
