The sacred discourses of Śrīla Rādhā Govinda Dāsa Gosvāmī Mahārāja are an invaluable source of spiritual wisdom, drawing from the timeless teachings of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. On the second day of his lecture in Kanpur, Mahārāja continued his discourse on Saunakādi Ṛṣiyo ke Praśna (the questions of the sages headed by Śaunaka Ṛṣi). This topic, rooted in the profound discussions between Śrī Sūta Gosvāmī and the sages in Naimiṣāraṇya, reveals essential spiritual principles that guide seekers on the path of devotion (bhakti). The lecture delved into the nature of their questions, their intent, and the spiritual significance of their inquiries.

Mahārāja began the discourse by painting a vivid picture of the historical backdrop in which the sages gathered at Naimiṣāraṇya. He explained that these sages, under the leadership of Śaunaka Ṛṣi, assembled to perform a thousand-year yajña (sacrificial offering) for the spiritual upliftment of the people of Kali-yuga. Understanding the short lifespan, quarrelsome nature, and spiritual degradation of people in this age, the sages sought a means to attain the ultimate good for all living beings.

Their foremost concern was the welfare of humanity and the means to attain true happiness. This led them to pose profound questions to Sūta Gosvāmī, who was chosen as their spiritual guide due to his deep knowledge and realization of the scriptures.

The Nature of the Questions

Mahārāja highlighted that the sages did not ask superficial questions about material prosperity, political affairs, or mundane happiness. Instead, their questions revolved around the supreme goal of life and the ultimate dharma (religion) for all living beings. These inquiries reflect the genuine intent of an earnest seeker and are foundational to Sanātana-dharma (eternal religion).

Among the most significant questions posed by the sages were:

  1. What is the highest good (śreyaḥ) for all living beings?
  2. What is the essence of all revealed scriptures?
  3. Why did the Supreme Lord, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, incarnate and perform His pastimes?
  4. What is the process to attain ultimate liberation (mokṣa)?
