This podcast explains John's vision from Revelation 12:7, where he saw the war in heaven that began when the premortal church of God was restored on Kolob from the wilderness of God's celestial residence. This occurred in the likeness of the restoration of the church on earth in 1830.
The war in heaven was a literal war between armies led by Lucifer (the Dragon), on the one hand, and Michael the Archangel, on the other hand. This was not a physical war that involved bloodshed. It was an ideological war between premortal spirits and spiritual death was the consequence to those who succumbed to the lies and half-truths of Lucifer and his sons of Perdition. During this conflict, the missionary armies of Michael and Lucifer contended for the undecided and lukewarm spirits that failed to commit themselves either to Jesus Christ or to Lucifer during the grand council on Kolob. During the war in heaven there could be no neutrality. Spirits that made and kept gospel covenants kept their first estate and could progress to a second estate where they received a physical body. Those that failed to make and keep gospel covenants kept not their first estate and were denied a second estate.
Lucifer's objective during the war in heaven was to destroy faith in Jesus Christ. He and his rebellious followers were antichrist and they have their likeness in earthly antichrists described in the book of Mormon.
