ST 09: The Many Branches of Empathy

Listen Later

In today's episode, we explore empathy, that magical thing that allows us to feel into what the other feels, take on their perspective, and show compassion, all without losing ourselves in the process. We explore the three kinds of empathy, as well as talking about where on the end of emotional engagement you fall.

Empathy is not necessarily a single, uniform way of responding though. Empathy is more like a tree, with many branches. We can respond empathetically in different ways, because empathy isn’t rigidly planned out, rather it tends to be spontaneous, and it most frequently emerges when we are in a space where the other is vulnerable (whether they outwardly show it or not).

* Check out Daniel Coleman's book: Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ* Work on breaking down your barriers to empathy by embracing the unknown and letting your partner surprise you, treating yourself with as much kindness as you can stand, and either raising your defenses or lowering them, to a place where you know where you end and the other begins.

AND, quick note re: the quiz! Dudes, it's coming, last week was a doozy and I record these in advance and totally felt like it would be done by now, but alas. Tech difficulties still persist. It's coming soon though!
