When Faith Gets Complicated - Logan Fraley by St. Mark Houston

We close out the Powering Down series with the fruit that grows when we actually stop: love. Not love as another obligation to add to an already impossible list, but love as the natural result of resting in Jesus and being filled by him.

We dig into John 15, Galatians 5, and 1 Corinthians 13 to discover that the primary fruit of a life rooted in Christ is love, and that love has a very specific shape. It chooses people over plans, presence over mere attendance, and patience over productivity. Love, it turns out, moves at about three miles an hour, the speed of walking, and you simply cannot do it at the pace most of us are living.

The question worth sitting with today is this: when all is said and done, what story do you want the people who know you to tell? Because if you want it to be a story of love, something about the speed has to change. And the good news is that Jesus has already won the freedom for you to slow down and choose the people.

Life was supposed to slow down this summer. It didn't. And if we're honest, it never will, not on its own.

This week we tackle one of the most countercultural ideas in all of scripture: Sabbath rest. But Jesus reframes the whole thing. Sabbath was never meant to be another burden to observe rightly. It was made for us, and Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath, transforms it from a day we rest on into a person we rest in. Because of what Jesus has accomplished, the work of saving and proving and earning is finished, and we are freed from the exhausting task of justifying ourselves.

We explore three reasons followers of Jesus rest: rest is rebellion against a world that says you only matter if you produce, rest is reformation that reshapes us back into who we really are, and rest is rejuvenation that our bodies, minds, and souls were literally designed to need. And then we get practical: what does it look like to build ceasing, feasting, and slowing into the rhythm of your actual life?

Underneath all the busyness, the scrolling, the consuming, and the relentless doing is a hunger that most of us have never stopped long enough to name: a soul-level hunger for approval. It goes all the way back to Eden, where God looked at mankind and called us very good, and everything since has been humanity's attempt to get that back.

This week we sit with one of Jesus's most scandalous parables, the Pharisee and the tax collector, and discover that there are really only two paths people take toward that approval: earning it or receiving it. The shocking twist is that the legitimately bad guy walked out of the temple with what Adam and Eve lost, not because of anything he did, but because he came with empty hands.

The truth is that no amount of effort, activity, or moral performance will get you what you are actually hungry for, because approval from God cannot be earned. It can only be received as a gift through faith in Jesus, the one good man who lived perfectly and died sacrificially so that God could look at you and say what he said in the beginning: you are very good.

Jesus offers one of the most countercultural invitations in all of scripture: come to Me, take My yoke, and I will give you rest. But what does that actually mean, and what does it look like on a Tuesday?

This week we dig into Matthew 11:28-30 and discover that Jesus is not just offering a feeling of peace, but a whole reorientation of daily life, inviting us to let Him serve as our rabbi, setting the pace and the priorities. We explore three things we see Jesus model: celebrating identity over productivity, drawing on the strength of the Spirit rather than His own, and keeping His eyes fixed on the cross with fierce, unrelenting focus.

But perhaps the most important thing to understand about the yoke is this: Jesus does not stand apart from the burden and hand it to us. He attaches Himself to us, climbs in alongside us, and promises to carry the weight. You are yolked to someone gentle and lowly, and that changes everything.

Everyone is tired. Everyone is anxious. Everyone is distracted. And the instinct is to just power through, but this new series asks a different question: what if we powered down instead?

We dig into the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10, where Jesus gently confronts Martha not because she is doing bad things, but because she is drowning in good ones. The real problem, Jesus suggests, is not a calendar problem or a technology problem. It is a soul problem, a deep human tendency to believe that our worth comes from what we do, what we have, or what others think of us. Mary understood something Martha missed: the one thing we actually need is not another task completed but unhurried time with Jesus himself.

This week we begin exploring what it looks like, practically and daily, to choose connection over consumption and dwelling over doing.

We close out our Summer Shorts series with two of the Bible's shortest books, Second John and Third John, and they share one surprising theme: hospitality.

John writes to a church navigating a world full of false teachers, people who denied that Jesus came in the flesh, and his message is both urgent and practical. Christians are called to be unreasonably inhospitable to lies and unreasonably hospitable to the truth.

We dig into what that looks like today, when the front door knocking at our hearts is less often a traveling preacher and more often a screen, a feed, or a worldview quietly asking to move in. The call is not to fear or to build a Christian bubble, but to stand guard, pay attention, and be intentional about what we welcome into our homes and hearts. And at the center of it all is the greatest irony: Jesus himself endured the ultimate inhospitality from the world so that we could be fully and completely welcomed into his home.

This week in Summer Shorts, we dig into the book of Jude, one of the Bible's shortest letters and one of its most urgent.

Jude had planned to write about salvation, but something came up: false teachers had quietly slipped into the church, twisting God's grace into permission to live however they wanted. His message to the church then is just as relevant now. Contend for the faith, hold fast to the truth, and don't let anyone reshape the word of God to fit a worldly mold.

We also explore a fascinating question: was Jude actually the half-brother of Jesus? And if so, what does it mean that he introduces himself not as Jesus's brother, but as his servant? That single choice might be one of the strongest arguments we have for who Jesus really is. The same God who freed his people from slavery in Egypt came to free us from slavery to sin, and that truth, Jude says, is worth fighting for.

What are the greatest feuds of all time? From the Hatfields and McCoys to Hamilton and Burr, history is full of rivalries, but none with longer-lasting consequences than the feud between two brothers: Jacob and Esau.

This week in Summer Shorts, we dig into the book of Obadiah, the shortest book in the Old Testament, written at the moment when Edom stood back and watched, even celebrated, as their brother Israel was ransacked by Babylon. At the heart of their betrayal, God names one thing: pride. And through Obadiah, God makes clear that the same pride fueling that ancient feud is alive in all of us, in every relationship where hurt has curdled into superiority, and where someone else's suffering quietly satisfies us.

But Obadiah doesn't end in judgment. He ends with a promise: a day is coming when all feuds cease, and a kingdom bound together by mercy reigns over the whole earth. We believe that day arrived in Jesus Christ, and the church is where that kingdom is already taking shape.

This week in our Summer Shorts series, we dig into the entire book of Philemon, one of the shortest letters in the New Testament and one of the most personal.

Paul writes from prison to his friend Philemon on behalf of Onesimus, a runaway slave, asking Philemon to receive him back not as property but as a beloved brother in Christ. Along the way, Paul models something remarkable: rather than pulling rank, he appeals to relationship, to love, and to the kind of generosity that flows naturally from genuine faith. The story of Onesimus, slave turned free, debt paid by another, is a picture of the gospel itself, mirroring exactly what Jesus did for every one of us. And the story of Paul, once a persecutor of Christians and now their greatest champion, reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of God's transforming grace.
