  • Speaking with Wendell Edward Carter
Author of : Melting The Snow: A Snow Queen’s Journey To A BlackGaySexLife

Confession (1989): You might think it an anachronism, African Americans stuck in 'whiteness'. You know, 'a fly in buttermilk' and all that. It's not. Far from it. Being trapped in 'white' culture happens to more and more people of color all the time. I have a cousin who doesn't have a single 'white' friend except for coworkers; his whole social world is African American. And then there's me. My life is that way now, but it didn't used to be. I made it that way. I am a reformed 'snow queen'.

My name is Darryl Reed. I'm 28 years old. I'm five feet nine inches tall, about 170 pounds (most of which is bone and muscle), and have features some have described as African or West Indian. and I'm a full fledged faggot. (I know that term isn't exactly PC, but there you have it). Or a black gay man, depending on how you look at it. I've grown up insulated from 'blackness' by education, television and willful ignorance. I became a prisoner of white culture. This is the story of how I broke free and found a blackgaysexlife.
