Ephesians Chapter 4

This intro to the chapter paints a picture of the value of

synergy - the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

The middle of this chapter focuses on the benefits of

the body of Christ...and the difficulties of “working

together”

The end of this chapter gives us practical application of

what this looks like in action...how we are to “walk

worthy” of being a member of the Body of Christ.

Eph 4:1 (NLT) Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the

Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for

you have been called by God. 2 Always be humble and

gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for

each other’s faults because of your love. 3 Make every

effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding

yourselves together with peace. 4 For there is one body

and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one

glorious hope for the future.

● This glorious hope for the future was provided by

Jesus’ death, burial, & resurrection.

● Chapter’s 1,2,&3 show us what we have in Christ,

the potential, the possibilities. In order to walk in

the fullness of “the blessing” chapter 4 starts off

saying we need to “walk worthy”.

● Don’t go works on me here...not what I’m talking

about. The point is, the way the Lord has designed

the church to function, requires us to be

connected to one another...this allows supply to

flow.

Eph 4:11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles,

some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors

and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the

work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the

knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the

measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that

we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and

carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the

trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful

plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up

in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from

whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what

every joint supplies, according to the effective working

by which every part does its share, causes growth of the

body for the edifying of itself in love.

● As we all work together, staying connected, doing

our part...the body grows.

● We are not providing a holiday here on the earth.

But we are bringing life to those around us.

Victory, freedom, joy, peace, healing,

purpose...these are what’s available on our

“cruise”.

Eph 4:22 that you put off, concerning your former

conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to

the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of

your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which

was created according to God, in true righteousness

and holiness.

● This is practical application of how we will get the

most from this experience of walking together,

serving one another, in love.

● The chapter ends with several things that will

expedite this “Staff Synergy” in our lives.

● Stop lying, be angry and sin not, don’t steal, watch

your mouth...let no corrupt word proceed from

your mouth, then he says to be kind,

tenderhearted, and forgiving.
