Part of a Roman soldier’s armor was the breastplate. The purpose of the breastplate was to cover the torso of the soldier to protect the internal organs from being penetrated by the enemy. The most important thing it was to protect was the heart. In teaching a spiritual lesson through a physical representation of the armor of a Roman soldier, Paul is teaching believers to put on the armor of God. He refers to the breastplate as the breastplate of righteousness. The most important thing it was to protect was the heart. The enemy’s top two targets are to affect your mind and your emotions because he can’t touch anything else to pluck you from the Father’s hand, so he’s going to hinder your closeness to God. A righteous and holy lifestyle deflects the penetration of the enemy and his ability to influence your thoughts and emotions. Listen to this sermon about the breastplate of righteousness in the third part of our Stand series.
