What if you could try on a different version of yourself without pretending to be someone you're not?

A ridiculous argument with my eight-year-old daughter over Halloween costumes got me thinking about something much bigger: why do we give ourselves permission to behave differently when we're wearing a costume, but feel so attached to playing the same familiar roles in everyday life?

In this episode, I'm sharing stories from my years performing on cruise ships, the surprising things I've discovered about myself in the elementary school pickup line, and a concept I've been exploring called Conscious Expression.

It's the idea that authenticity doesn't have to mean showing up as the same version of yourself everywhere you go. You contain multitudes! And you can consciously choose which parts of yourself to turn up, explore, and express.

We'll explore the difference between adapting yourself to be accepted and intentionally choosing how you want to show up, why experimenting with different sides of your personality isn't being fake, and how even the smallest changes can transform your experience of the life you already have.

I don't think you need to find your one true self. Maybe there's a whole lot more of you waiting to come out and play.

How many times can one person arrive at the same simple answer, overthink it to death, and eventually circle right back to it? Apparently, at least three.

I’ve been trying to figure out exactly what my new performance and presence work is before I start doing it. But a lifetime onstage has taught me something my business brain conveniently forgot: performance isn’t only where I demonstrate what I know. It’s one of the ways I come to know.

In this short episode, I’m looking at why we distrust the simple next step, what a live audience can teach us that rehearsing alone never will, and why sometimes the only way to find out what happens in the room is to get in the damn room.

Next month, I will have lived in California longer than I lived in New York City—and I wasn’t prepared for the grief that particular piece of math would bring up.

So this week, I’m telling one of the stories that explains why I love New York so much.

It begins with a borrowed little black dress, a pair of too-big heels, and a last-minute assignment as Bono’s personal waitress at the opening-night party for Spider-Man on Broadway. A few weeks later, the man I had just started dating unknowingly brought me right back to Bono—with 35,000 screaming U2 fans along for the ride.

It’s a story about New York magic, wonderfully specific coincidences, and the moments that only reveal their meaning in retrospect. Because sometimes what we miss most about a place is the person we were while we lived there—and sometimes remembering her is an invitation to become her again.

I had two and a half kid-free hours, three competing priorities—and one very loud desire to go shopping for fall décor at TJ Maxx.

I read a horrifying book that began unraveling my understanding of identity, reality, and humanity itself.

I’m not saying I’m throwing goals out the window—but I’m not not saying that either.

Goals can give us a direction, but they don’t always account for the changing capacity, seasons, and beautiful unpredictability of an actual human life. And habits? For some of us, they can become one more opportunity to believe we’re getting it wrong.

In this episode, I’m exploring a different way to think about consistency: not as maintaining a perfect streak, but as finding a rhythm we can return to. Because a habit says, “Do the thing.” A rhythm says, “Return to the thing.”

Fledgling Season

A baby crow on the ground.

In this episode, I'm reflecting on the stories we tell ourselves when we don't have the full picture, the perspectives we miss when we're certain we're right, and the surprising freedom that comes from asking, What else might be true here?

A chance encounter with what appeared to be an injured bird led me to a deeper realization about a situation I'd been wrestling with all week—and reminded me that awareness changes experience.

Because sometimes what looks like failure is actually growth.
