Blum does seem like a grumpy old man resenting the attention that younger Gen Xers are getting. However, at the time Blum wrote the piece, McCarthy was twenty-two years old, and Blum was twenty-nine. Therefore, the age gap is not that great. But more than just addressing the age gap as one of the "reasons why" Blum approached them, there was a class divide at play. Blum's disdain for people of this caliber is evident both in the article and right now. You know, attractive, wealthy folks who look to be trouble-free except for knowing which free events to attend that offer tons of goodies. Andrew McCarthy, a Brat Pack "charter member," is obviously very disturbed by the unwelcome "rebranding."
