Parenting Today’s Teens

Starting in the Shallow End

Listen Later

Remember learning to swim? Your first experience wasn’t in the deep end!
When our parents taught us to swim, they started in the shallow end. Remember? At first, we flailed, then we eventually learned the correct technique. And eventually, we began swimming in deeper and deeper water.
You’re not gonna throw your teen in the deep end of life and yell, “swim!” No, you train her in shallow waters where the consequences are smaller and you’re there to rescue, if needed. Will she go under at times? Sure! Will she swallow water? Of course.
But one day she’ll be ready to venture out on her own, where the stakes are high, the waters are deep, and she’ll swim just fine.
