I am a HUGE dog lover, involved in rescue and currently have three dogs. I really enjoy books about dogs and own many. I am especially drawn to when they are about the canine-human bond. I would have to say that anyone who knows me would say I am obsessed with dogs, especially "pit bull" type dogs. That being said, I didn't have the same experience as the others who have reviewed this book. While I appreciated some moments that I could relate to of how she felt about her dog once they bonded, I found it to be too intellectualized. At times for me it was downright boring, not really a "story" which is what I was looking for. It was mainly the author wordily espousing her thoughts with little about Max himself. He was more of an object she mentioned but gave no depth or description of him as a real living creature. I would prefer to have heard more about Max, I felt that I didn't know him at all at the end of the book. She would say things like everywhere he went people loved him or he lit up a room but then never explain what he did to make it so. It just felt more like a documentary about the author than about Max. Obviously this is why there are so many different people in the world and different choices, everyone has their own perspective. For me this was only so-so.....

Great read - Starting with Max
Starting with Max is one of those lovely reads for anyone, especially dog lovers.
It is both sad and uplifting and is the true story of a migrant woman's move to a new country and life and how a stray dog helps her get through the loneliness, changes and loss she feels at moving from her career, extended family and life.
In a new city, Ying Ying is convinced by her husband and daughter to get a dog (against her immediate wishes). They chose Max from the local RSPCA shelter on the very day he was due to be put down.
Max is an incredible and special animal. One of those special animals who lift the spirit of humans and who can make even the crankiest, animal hating person, smile.
