Good Day Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Friday April 29, 2016. My name is Grant and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus.
Matthew 26:36–39 (HCSB)
36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and He told the disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 Taking along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow —to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with Me.” 39 Going a little farther, He fell facedown and prayed, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.”
This passage accurately shows Jesus in complete vulnerability. He is praying in the Garden of Gethsemane acutely aware of what is about to happen. Judas is on his way to betray Jesus to the religious leaders who will then proceed to successfully crucify Jesus. But Jesus knows that none of this is happening outside of God the Father’s direction. Jesus knows that God the Father can stop it all, and so Jesus asks, “if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
The only way that the cup of Jesus suffering could pass from him was by Jesus going through that suffering. He had to go to the cross, not because that is what the religious leaders were conspiring for, instead he went to the cross because it was the only way to free us from the power of sin.
Jesus was crucified on a Friday, on the third day, that Sunday, Jesus rose to life again, and has victory over sin and death. This means that Jesus can offer his followers real life.
This life is only possible because of his suffering. Jesus still calls to his followers is to “Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me.” That means that when we agree to follow Jesus, we agree to suffer for his name, but in doing so we will experience that real life that he came to give.
Read through Matthew Chapters 26, 27 and 28 and each time that you read about Jesus’ suffering, stop to thank God for going through that torment so that you can have real life in Jesus.
Our challenges for this week have all entered around prayer. Today i challenge you to pray the same prayer that Jesus prayed regarding tough circumstances in your life. Jesus prayed, “If it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will but as you will.
