Good Day Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Friday May 13, 2016. My name is Grant and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus.
Today’s scripture is Matthew 5:14–16 (HCSB)
14 “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
This is a familiar passage to many of us. We tend to think of this as a very personal teaching, do good things so that other people will see you doing good things and then praise God. However, that’s not quite right. Our understanding of the text is impact by the word “You”, as in, “You are the light of the world”. Its not just talking about you the individual. Instead, imagine Jesus saying this looking out at all of his followers, and it being for all of them. “You (together as my people) are the light of the world.”
This is a really important distinction to make, if its our actions on display, we are likely to want to put ourselves on a pedestal and invite others to be impressed. The only person who should be on a pedestal is Jesus. The Bible refers to the church as “The Body of Christ”, so when we as his Church have our collective community good works on display, then the glory will go to the right person, God alone.
Its not our individual actions that need to be on display for the world to see. Instead, it is the light that comes from being the people of God. How are we treating each other.
Maybe we should all ask the question, “Is there light or darkness coming from the relationships that we have with others?” The way that community life happens inside of the church should be a shining example for the world to learn about God’s grace, love, forgiveness, peace and righteousness. Lets live our lives worthy of the gospel of Jesus, and as a community let Jesus light shine bright in this dark world.
The Challenge for this week revolves around sexual purity. I challenge you this week to set a goal for purity in your life, and then to tell your parents what that goal is. Ask them to hold you accountable to it, and ask them to pray for you and to pray with you.
This weeks invitation is for all students in Grades 9-12. This friday night we are having a SR High youth event at Hawkwood Baptist Church. Our game for the evening is Capture the Flag and our Bible study will be on purity. The night begins at 7 and concludes at 9:30.
