Good Day Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Wednesday May 11, 2016. My name is Grant and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus.
Today’s scripture is Exodus 18:18–23 (HCSB)
The context for this passage is that Moses is leading the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land on a 40 year journey through the dessert. He gets a visit from his father in law Jethro and Jethro sees a problem with how Moses is settling disputes for the people.
Exodus 18:18–23 (HCSB)
18 “You will certainly wear out both yourself and these people who are with you, because the task is too heavy for you. You can’t do it alone. 19 Now listen to me; I will give you some advice, and God be with you. You be the one to represent the people before God and bring their cases to Him. 20 Instruct them about the statutes and laws, and teach them the way to live and what they must do. 21 But you should select from all the people able men, God-fearing, trustworthy, and hating bribes. Place them over the people as commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. 22 They should judge the people at all times. Then they can bring you every important case but judge every minor case themselves. In this way you will lighten your load, and they will bear it with you. 23 If you do this, and God so directs you, you will be able to endure, and also all these people will be able to go home satisfied.”
This solution wasn’t only to make Moses role of leader more manageable, it was to greatly help the entire nation. For Moses, he would learn how to trust God as others judged the cases that Moses used to judge. He would give space and opportunity for others to grow in their leadership abilities, and those people would then be able to lead and help others lead.
By splitting up the responsibilities of judging the legal cases, Moses also gave the nation of Israel opportunity to grow and mature. Think of it this way, parents are usually able to solve any of the problems that their children have with each other. But the parents would be very happy if the children could work through the issues without the parents help. There is not a mom or dad who wants to spend all of their time breaking up petty disputes among siblings. The same is true in God’s Kingdom. Our time is better used when we grow in maturity to the point where we can put our wants and desires to the side, and seek to make peace with one another.
The Challenge for this week revolves around sexual purity. I challenge you this week to set a goal for purity in your life, and then to tell your parents what that goal is. Ask them to hold you accountable to it, and ask them to pray for you and to pray with you.
This weeks invitation is for all students in Grades 9-12. This Friday night we are having a SR High youth event at Hawkwood Baptist Church. Our game for the evening is Capture the Flag and our Bible study will be on purity. The night begins at 7 and concludes at 9:30.
