Hi Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Monday June 20. My name is Grant and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus. As I read out the scripture for today, pay attention to the word credit, we’ll be taking about it later.
Romans 4:1–5 (HCSB)
1 What then can we say that Abraham, our physical ancestor, has found? 2 If Abraham was justified by works, he has something to brag about—but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness. 4 Now to the one who works, pay is not considered as a gift, but as something owed. 5 But to the one who does not work, but believes on Him who declares the ungodly to be righteous, his faith is credited for righteousness.
The phrase that jumps out at me here comes from verse 3, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness.” What is the first idea that comes into your mind about credit? What I think about is a credit card. And its actually a pretty good way of understanding how God credits us with righteousness.
When Visa goes to credit you though, its not with righteousness, it’s with money, and here is the basic plan. The give you a card that tells the shop owner that they will pay your bill. You have a credit on their account. So you can charge the account and Visa’s credit will cover your purchase. This credit comes at a cost, you have to pay Visa back within three weeks or you start to pay interest on the credit. God’s credit also comes at a cost, the only way that we can be made right is by Jesus dying on the cross for all of our wrongs.
Visa’s credit is for dollars, but God’s credit is for righteousness. You might be surprised to hear that credit for righteousness is much more valuable than for money. For starters, money can’t buy you forgiveness of sins, the Holy Spirit or eternal life. But Jesus paid it all, so that you can be forgiven of your sins and called right. The Holy Spirit is given to all whose sins are forgiven, and eternal life with God is for all people who are right with God. Abraham received his righteousness by believing in God, and so can you.
