StartUp – Monday June 6

Listen Later

Hi Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Monday June 6. My name is Grant and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus.
Lets start today’s podcast with a question. Who decides what is true and what is a lie? Who gets to judge others on if they are living according to truth? Most of us think that our ways are true, most of us instinctively approve or disapprove of others based on our understanding. In Romans 2, we see that God is the ultimate judge of truth.
Romans 2:1–4 (HCSB)

1 Therefore, any one of you who judges is without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things. 2 We know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is based on the truth. 3 Do you really think—anyone of you who judges those who do such things yet do the same—that you will escape God’s judgment? 4 Or do you despise the riches of His kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
When I read that first line I am taken back. In Romans 1, Paul has just finished naming a fairly comprehensive list of sins, I thought that he was naming those sins so that I could judge. But now in Romans 2 Paul says, any one of you who judges is without excuse.
Here is the reason, my judgement doesn’t just condemn the people that I am judging, it also condemns me. I accuse somebody of one thing, only to search my heart and find that I too am guilty.
Our world desperately longs for justice, and yet none of is able to provide that justice because we are all sinful. God is the righteous judge that we know that we need. He will ensure that every act that is ever committed will have a proper judgement. It is the timing of God’s judgement that is the important thing. God is being patient to judge, which is a huge help to you and me. Because of God’s patience we are given time to repent of our sins and ask for his forgiveness. Because of God’s patience, we have time to share God’s good news of forgiveness with others.
Our sin condemns us to death, and There is only one escape from that punishment. God, the righteous and holy judge, put his own son Jesus Christ to death for the sin of humankind. It is only in Jesus that we can be forgiven of our sins. It is only in Jesus that our punishment is paid by him, and not by ourselves. Repent of your sin while you still have time.
Here is your Challenge. I know that this is the last week of classes for many of you, and maybe the last time that you will see some of your friends for the summer or longer. I challenge you to write a kind and encouraging note to someone this week who you might not see again for a while.
