StartUp – Monday May 9, 2016

Listen Later

Good Day Passionate Youth Reaching Out, today is Monday May 9, 2016.  My name is Grant and this is Start Up, helping you start your day with an upward focus.
Today’s scripture is Mark 10:17–22 (HCSB)
17 As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 “Why do you call Me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good but One—God. 19 You know the commandments: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.” 20 He said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.” 21 Then, looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” 22 But he was stunned at this demand, and he went away grieving, because he had many possessions.
Here is the context for this passage.  Jesus was becoming well known as a teacher who could explain the things of God with authority, more authority than what the crowds of that day were used.  This young man finds Jesus, in order to hear from the teacher with authority on how he could inherit eternal life.  Jesus takes the man through the law of the Old Testement, and is likely impressed that this young man is able to make the claim that he has kept the law.
Jesus then shocks the crowd, and the man by saying, “You lack oe thing: Go, sell al you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.”  This was a shock because the people of that day equated obedience with material blessings.  It was a given that this man was wealthy because he had obeyed the law so well.  We can paraphrase what Jesus is saying like this, “Keeping the law is good, but its not everything.  Find what has captured your heart at its deepest level, and prove with your actions that your heart will submit to my rule.”
Money had this mans heart.  What has your heart?  Is there something in your life that you would be devastated to lose for the sake of Jesus Christ?  The call to follow Jesus is to deny yourself, pick up your cross and follow him.  There can be nothing in your life more important than God.
The Challenge for this week revolves around sexual purity.  I challenge you this week to set a goal for purity in your life, and then to tell your parents what that goal is.  Ask them to hold you accountable to it, and ask them to pray for you and to pray with you.
This weeks invitation is for all students in Grades 9-12.  This friday night we are having a SR High youth event at Hawkwood Baptist Church.  Our game for the evening is Capture the Flag and our Bible study will be on purity.  The night begins at 7 and concludes at 9:30.
